Ben's boo-boo

What do you do when your baby, eh, toddler gets hurt and you really need to make dinner but can't put him down?
You put rice on a baking dish along with some trucks and animals.
It will distract him for a few minutes so you can get the rice in the rice cooker and the poppy seed chicken in the oven.

It may even give a few minutes so you can take care of the dishes...
Let's face it, it makes for a cute photo opportunity too.
Oh, are you wondering what happened? I guess I better mention that part...
Yesterday Ben and I met Neala at an indoor playground to play. We were having insulation put into the house and with Ben's asthma acting up lately it just wasn't an option to stay home.
Anyway, this is a new place so we decided to check it out. We weren't there more then 20 minutes when Ben and I went up and down a big blow up slide. It was fun and we decided to do it again! Unfortunately when we did it again it wasn't so much fun.
As we were going down Ben's slipper bottom gripped onto the slide and stopped his foot. Not so much with the rest of us though and my body ran over his ankle. It completely twisted his ankle and I heard a pop. I can't get that POP sound out of my head either and it makes my stomach turn!
I knew IMMEDIATELY that something was wrong! Neala saw my face, then Ben's and she knew right away too. We checked his ankles and feet right away and didn't see anything obvious but he wouldn't stand up at all. He cried, a lot, but it was a not normal cry.
With in a few minutes I headed out the door to the ER. It was only 10-15 minutes away. They brought us in right away. Ben was not acting himself at all. I knew he didn't have a head injury but he was very lethargic and I was worried very much about it. Then he just fell asleep, just like that. The doctor said that after a trauma it is very normal for a little kid to just shut down and sleep. Thankfully when he woke up not too long after he was a lot more normal and alert.
The ER took x-rays of his foot and ankle but they didn't show anything. We were sent home with instructions to call an orthopedic doctor in two-three days if he didn't improve. I KNEW something was wrong so I called as soon as we left the hospital. I talked to them at about 4:30 and since they close at 5 they said to bring him in first thing this morning. The nurse felt like it was a good possibility that his leg was broken.
We got there at 8:30 and he had x-rays of his leg done. Sure enough he fractured his tibia bone. It is a clean V shaved fracture half way up his shin. So he is in a full leg cast. From his toes to his upper thigh. I guess it is somewhat common when a little one twists and ankle that they get damage up the leg.
His sisters and brother were obsessed with wanting to sign it! Finally I gave the OK but Ben wasn't thrilled at all about that.
Notice we went with red! We like to be festive around here and since Ben will be sporting this for Christmas we wanted a red cast. They were going to do a green stripe around it but Ben was done sitting and had done so well that I didn't want him to have to sit any longer.

For three weeks he will be in this big, heavy cast. Hopefully by then the fracture will be healed and life will go back to normal!
Final words of advice.... Don't let your kids wear slippers or anything with grip on a big bouncy slide, I learned the hard way!
